From the Greens to the Phantoms

A proud history built by passionate people in the Riverina.

1955

Early Rugby in Leeton

A Leeton/Narrandera team first competed in the Riverina Rugby competition, featuring notable players like Harry Penrith (Burnam Burnam) and Arthur Tonkin.

1974

The Club Reforms

Following Bob Cole's arrival in Narrandera, the modern club was reformed, initially playing as "the Greens".

1976

Narrandera-Leeton RUFC

The club was officially recognised as the Narrandera-Leeton Rugby Union Club.

1985

The Phantoms Are Born

An end-of-season party led to the club adopting the name "Phantoms" — inspired by Bruce Washington's love of the classic comic character "The Ghost Who Walks".

1986

Purple Reign Begins

The club adopted its now-iconic purple playing colours, completing the Phantom identity.

1987

The Skull Cave

The famous Skull Cave clubhouse was built, becoming renowned as one of the best spots in the Riverina for post-game gatherings.

1991

First Premiership

The Phantoms won their first and only first-grade top division premiership, defeating Wagga Waratahs 21-7.

1996

Triple Crown

A dominant season saw the club win all three grades in the VPC competition.

1997

The Dianas

The women's team was formed, named after the Phantom character's wife Diana. The Dianas would go on to win four premierships (2000, 2002, 2013).

Today

Growing the Game

With over 200 junior players, gala days attracting 1,200+ attendees, and a thriving community, the Phantoms continue to grow rugby in the Riverina.
